Unicorn Class Term 1 Week 69 October 2026 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick)) |
Unicorn Class Blog Term 1 Week 6 Week Commencing 5th October 2026
This week we have had a vets role play area, we have been taking it in turns to pretend to be the vet and to take our pets to the vets. We have been learning the names and the purposes of the different vets’ tools as we played. We listened to and discussed ‘Mog and the V.E.T’ by Judith Kerr and children have been discussing their own experiences of vets, either through taking their own pets to the vets and when their pet or a relatives pet has been taken to the vet. It was discussed how some animals like farm animals may have the vet come to visit them on the farm, if they are unwell or injured, as they may be too heavy to carry. Some of the children decided that they would not like a hurt/poorly lion or crocodile in their car as that would be very scary and the animals may try to eat them. We made crocodiles using paper, glue and zig zag scissors and pretended we were vets looking after them.
We have enjoyed learning about different roles of Farmers and tractors on farms, using the small world farm and sharing nonfiction and fiction books. The information book about tractors was very popular with children showing lots of curiosity with the questions being asked. Some of us wanted to draw and paint farm pictures. We went on a yoga farm adventure. We listened and looked very carefully and copied the movements.
This week we have also enjoyed making apple and pear crumble. We very carefully used the knife to cut apples and pears into small pieces. We then made the crumble mix for the top of the apple and pear by scooping flour into a bowl and mixing it together with butter and a little bit of sugar. When it was all mixed up we enjoyed sprinkling it to the top of the fruit. It was put in the oven. We thought it smelled delicious when it was cooking and most of us liked the taste of it too.
We enjoyed collecting autumn’s treasures in a bucket and discussing what we had found, the different colours on the leaves and amounts. We listened to ‘Leaf Man’ by Lois Ehlert, discussed the pictures and made our own autumn collages.
Outside we have been climbing and balancing, making potions, playing families, going on adventures, splashing in puddles, watching the rain make circle patterns in the pond, making autumn collections, sweeping the leaves, using the wheelbarrows, the balance bikes and playing in the sand.
During phonics we have been using ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ rhyme to learn about onomatopoeia, a word that is spelled and pronounced the way it sounds (e.g, beep’). We have also used voice manipulation to recite the rhyme in different voices and have been orally segmenting and blending.
Our main maths focus this week has been recognising 3 objects without having to count them, we have used shells, rings, bricks, leaves, pom poms and even noticed leaves and fruits on our plate e.g. “I have 3 slices of apple and one cracker.
Next week we will be continuing with our ‘All about me topic’ and have a ‘Pumpkin Soup’ theme which will include puppet play. We will also be discussing and drawing who is in our family. If you have some pictures you think your child may like to show of their family, please can they bring them in or you can email them to the Unicorn Class email address.
There are a pile of jumpers/hoodies that are on the safety gate, please can you check if any of these belong to your child. Please can you name all items of clothing.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend and looking forward to seeing you all next week for more exploring.
Best wishes
