Another super week. Well done everyone!

Year 4 have done a great job writing character descriptions based on our class text. They are showing creativity and imagination as they weave details from the book into their own descriptions – lovely work!

In maths we have made a fantastic start to our Mastering Number sessions (multiplication and division and the relationship between them. In the main session we are working on column addition. This will continue next week.

What a fantastic week for writing in Year 5! This week the children have been working on character descriptions using a character from our class book and I have been blown away with the depth in the children's writing. It has been clear to see that the children have all understood the character and from that have added huge amounts of detail within their work. Well done year 5.

Maths this week has been carrying on with place value and different ways we can write tenths, this has even developed into how we can write multiplication equations using tenths and how this is shown. The children continue to show great understanding, even with the trickier concepts this week.

School and Eco Council Elections

We were very impressed with the children who stood for election. They delivered thoughtful messages and persuasive arguments to try to secure their position on their council. We want to congratulate them and also their peers, who listened respectfully and clearly appreciated the effort they had all made. They will find out the results on Monday.

Musical Instrument Loan Agreement

Y4 children met with Ali Andrews, our peripatetic music teacher this week and they were introduced to the instruments. Children will bring home a letter today, which must be signed and returned to school before your child is allowed to take their instrument home. If letters are returned by next Wednesday’s lesson they will come home with their instrument on Wednesday. We will complete the form with the Instrument Number when we give out instruments next week.

Homework:

SPELLINGS children have brought home their week 2 spelling list – stuck into their planners. They will be tested next Friday.

Times Tables practice – please see guidance below:

Year 4 MTC and Maths Challenge Times Tables practice for all (Year 4 and Year 5)

The Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check takes place later in the year and we will be working hard throughout the year towards learning and securing times tables facts to automaticity. To have instant recall of these facts is fundamental to successful calculation as it reduces cognitive load and allows children to focus on other aspects of the problem-solving process.  Year 5s may have completed their MTC last year but this does not mean that they should not continue to practice these crucial facts. USE IT OR LOSE IT! All children in the Upper School will complete a weekly times tables test which we call the MATHS CHALLENGE. There are five challenge levels to work through which not only focus on different times tables but also become increasingly more challenging.

Year 4s have had lessons last year teaching the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8 times tables. This year we will cover the 3, 6 and 9 times tables and the relationship between them , the 7 times table and the 11 and 12 times tables.

Our aim is that children will be secure in all times tables by the end of Year 4 and then keep working hard through regular practice to maintain that knowledge and instant recall throughout Years 5 and 6.
