Unicorn Class Blog Term 6 Week 3 Week Commencing 15th June 2026
Wow, what a very hot week, that fitted in perfectly with our space topic and for exploring this week's sun theme. All of the children have coped amazingly and enjoyed exploring shadows made by the sunlight being blocked, Here are some of the comments we have made about what we have learnt this week; “Planets go around the sun.”, “The sun is very, very hot like fire.”, “The sun is a star.”, “It is the closest star to earth”, “We can’t go to the sun it is too hot”, “The sun can burn us so we need to wear sun lotion.”, “The sun is a long way away from Earth.”, “The sun helps plants to grow.”. This week we have enjoyed painting our paper mache planets and making a giant sun for the display. using collage materials and paints to make paper plate suns and planets.
During Forest school this week we loved building homes using wood for our dinosaurs, looking for minibeasts. We found a scurrying beetle and some woodlice. Sam also decided to be a kind pig cooking salmon in garlic butter for the hungry wolves, Teddy then also decided to be a pig and pretended to make some ice-cream for the wolves pudding.
Playing on the All weather pitch was also popular this week with playing football, catch, rolling hoops, ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf’, ‘The floor in lava’ and ‘Duck, duck, goose!’ This week we also started doing races in preparation for our sport’s day.
We have enjoyed watching our potato plants grow taller and get more leaves. We helped to put compost into a large pot and dig holes so that we could plant some of our runner beans into a larger pot. We were fascinated by their roots and loved taking turns to water the plants.
We loved looking at baby pictures of some of our grown ups and some of us as a baby, then noticing what was similar and what had changed. We then talked about what we would like to be when we are an adult and grown up. We then drew a picture.
During phonics we have been rhyming, using alliteration, recapping all of the sounds we have learnt so far, orally segmenting and blending. We have been practising writing the letters, lots of us have wanted to use our letter knowledge to attempt to write on the small and big whiteboard, in note books and on their pictures. We also played an Alien and crocodile game.
During maths this week we have been doing lots of counting, solving real mathematical problems with numbers and linking numerals to amounts. We played a dominoes game, singing number songs and finding the number on the numberline, number puzzles and during snack time by looking at the number of pieces of fruit we could have.
This week some of the other activities we have enjoyed doing are using the Duplo, magnetic blocks, mobillo, making music using the musical instruments, playing in the sand, drawing, playing with the water and playing families.
Next week we will be having a seaside theme and we will continue practising for Sports Day. Sports Day is on Wednesday 1st July at 12.30 on the all weather pitch. The reserve date is Thursday 2nd July.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to more exploring with you next week.
Best wishes
