Unicorn Class Term 5 Week 6

22 May 2026 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog                                 Term 5 Week 6                  Week Commencing 18th May 2026

There was great excitement this week when our butterflies finally emerged from their chrysalis. We have been fascinated watching them dry out their beautiful wings, flutter around the butterfly net and watching them land on their food. The butterflies were strong enough to be released into the garden on Friday.

This week we have been exploring vegetables. As part of this we have been using our senses to have hands-on exploration of the vegetables. We liked the smell and touch of the carrots, broccoli, potatoes and courgettes. We liked the feel and look of onions but did not like the smell. Some of us liked the smell of garlic and thought it smelled like garlic bread and cooking. We have enjoyed washing, preparing and using the vegetables in our play to make up soups and other dinner dishes. We have been learning the names of different vegetables and enjoyed playing a Kim’s game.

We found out fruits come from the flowering part of a plant and contain seeds. Whereas, vegetables are the edible parts of a plant, such as the leaves, stem, roots and bulbs.

We enjoyed sharing the story of ‘Supertato’ by Paul Linnet and Sue Hendra, making Supertato paintings, drawings and making Supertatoes using real potatoes, collage materials, tape and felt tips. Some of our Supertatoes wanted to go outside and play rescuing and hide and seek.

We grated courgettes, ready to add with the rest of the ingredients for our courgette cup cakes.

Outside we have loved using the bikes, scooters, climbing frames, playing the floor is lava, looking for mini beastsand water play.

During phonics we have been recapping sounds. We have enjoyed Georgie’s Gym, attempting to read cvc words with the sounds we have learnt so far, the crocodile game and enjoyed rhyming with nursery rhymes and in stories.

This week during maths we have had a shape focus. We have been finding shapes in the environment, colouring and making pictures using the 2D shapes squares, triangles, rectangles and squares. We have also been describing them using informal mathematical language ‘side, corners, flat, round and straight’.

Next term our topic will be ‘What might we find in Space?’. As part of this we will be making paper mache planets, making rockets and using our great imaginations to go on space adventures
