Unicorn Class Term 4 Week 26 March 2026 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick)) |
Unicorn Class Blog Term 4 Week 2 Week Commencing 2nd March 2026
Wow, what a busy and exciting week in the Unicorn’s Class.
On Thursday children who wanted to enjoyed dressing up as Characters from books, there were a variety of books brought in from home that we enjoyed sharing. We enjoyed acting out our characters and talking about the story we were from. Some of us drew pictures of what we had dressed up as or part of our favourite story. We enjoyed looking for hidden book characters and working out what book they were from. Some of us wanted to make masks.
We listened to ‘Mr Wolf's Pancakes’ by Jan Fearnley and helped Mrs Fenwick to write a list of ingredients needed to make pancakes like Mr Wolf. We prepared healthy toppings for our pancakes and enjoyed eating them. We made and explored gloop which we thought looked like Pancake mixture, runny, creamy, white and like milk. When we touched the gloop we used a range of vocabulary to describe it such as sticky, wet, smooth, crumbly, drippy, hard, runny, gloopy. We were fascinated with the way we could scratch it up and it felt solid then it ran through our fingers like a liquid.
On Wednesday Lily told the class that it was Happy Holi Day, a Hindu festival also known as the Festival of colour. On the interactive whiteboard we watched people celebrating Holi and throwing coloured powders called gulal over each other. Some children decided they wanted to make colourful pictures for their grown ups.
This week using the magnet tiles, stacking cubes, Duplo and trains have been popular. There has been lots of great teamwork to work out what to build and how to build it. Poppy and myself have been impressed with how the construction kits have been combined to create their ideas.
Outside we have enjoyed water play, pretending to cook and making potions, using the balance bikes, bats and balls and climbing frame. We explored putting wheels and cars on the guttering. We were fascinated how quickly the wheels rolled down and how the wheels continued rolling on the concrete after coming off the guttering. Also how different cars went different distances and speeds. We played hide and seek and on Thursday we looked for different hidden story characters and worked out what books they came from.
This week we have been using the balance scales to compare weights of different items. We have had lots of great observations such as, “The big shell is heavier than the small shell”, “Look the bucket has gone down, the dinosaur is heavy.” and “The pinecone is light and the shell is heavy.”
During phonics this week we have continued to play rhyming games, and play Georgie’s Gym. We have been learning the nursery rhyme Little Miss Muffet and played a listening game where we needed to work out what vehicle was making the sound. We are continuing to learn the words and actions to our Alphabet chant. We have been learning the letters ‘e’ (Every elephant enters.’) and ‘u’ (The upside-down umbrella is unusual). The writing cue we use to write the grapheme ‘e’ is ‘Under his ear and around his trunk.’ and ‘u’ is ‘Under the umbrella, up and down.’ We practiced writing ‘e’ and ‘u’ letters using our magic fingers in the air and using pencils and whiteboard pens.
As part of SCARF this week we have been discussing healthy choices we can make to look after ourselves such as washing our hands before eating, after going to the toilet, before cooking and the reason why. We have been discussing healthy food choices and preparing healthy meals and lunch boxes in the home corner. We have looked at books about brushing teeth and going to the dentist, we used the dental set to pretend we are dentists, going to the dentists and brushing our dinosaurs’ teeth.
Next week as part of SCARF we will be discussing ways we help others. Please can you write on a piece of paper or send a message to the Unicorn email (unicornclass@nettlebed.oxon.sch.uk ) how your child/children have been helping you for example tidying their toys, preparing food, help looking after a pet etc.
As part of our topic this term ‘Walking, wings or wheels?’ We are having a focus on wings, if your child has a book about aeroplanes or something with wings and they would like to bring it in to share they are welcome to.
On Tuesday we are having Farms2ewe visiting our school.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you next week.
Best wishes
Mrs Fenwick
