The Week Ahead ...6 February 2026 (by Abigail Winter (awinter)) |
To all our wonderful Highflyer families,
Our topic focus for this final week of term is 'How can we care for our world around us?'. We have looked at the difference between physical and human geography and the wonders that each can provide. We have also investigated habitats and thought about the care needed for living things to remain safe and alive. Therefore, this week we shall be giving some greater thought to how our actions can affect the world around us and how we need to consider our actions when we build or alter our landscape and oceans. We are also planning on producing a collaborative piece thinking about how to preserve and keep our natural habitats safe around us. Although it has been quite a short term, it has gone by really quickly – with our last writing task to be on persuasion; therefore, to help this, we have also begun to debate in class – thinking about how best to give our opinion - agree or disagree - and to explain why! Great stuff indeed … ;)
Extra information: Tuesday is Safer Internet Day 2026 and throughout the school all classes will be discussing what is online safety and what we need to look out for; with an equal, yet sensitive, appreciation of recognising Children’s Mental Health Week within our PSHE and related practical group tasks.
Forest School remains on Wednesday (morning) with P.E. (as per the ‘norm’) on Thursday as timetabled.
Our phonic focus is: Week 6 Review and consolidation of this term's phonics learning; with, hopefully our new Whole Class Group Reader "An Invitation to a Party" by Janet Adsett already safely making it home in bags/planners?
Maths continues with our multiplication and division unit alongside practising the language of multiplication; with Mastering Number looking at adding three numbers together in one maths expression. However, next term we shall be coming back to understanding money; therefore, any role-playing 'shops' with coins of different denominations would be ideal to do at home and over the next few weeks at least :) The more practice opportunities, the more confidence the children will have in handling money – and one, that many, may still argue as an important life skill! Our homework will, therefore, reflects counting money but please do not forget that our weekly maths homework is truly ‘welcome’ on any day … and absolutely no need to worry if your child has stored up a couple to hand in; we completely understand!
Elements of our ‘short-ish’ Science Week will be concentrating on Properties of Materials – and looking at how their properties ultimately determine how they are used e.g. waterproof for umbrellas, transparent for windows and strong for building! A huge amount of observation and activities (which will challenge the children to group each material) have been planned – so, fingers crossed, after the excitement of our temporary toilets behind us (!?!) another really GREAT week ahead …
Wishing you all a lovely last week of the term – with our Star of the Term assembly on Friday 13th February from 2.45pm :)
Best wishes – as always
Mrs Winters and the whole ‘HF’ team
