The Week Ahead ...

30 January 2026 (by Abigail Winter (awinter))

To all our wonderful Highflyer families

Our exciting topic this term has been looking at the incredible, and inspirational, wonders of our world – and asking ourselves the question of “How is our World Wonderful?”. Therefore, last week we chose to write a story entry in the style of our recent author, Jane Cabrera (‘Love Our Earth’) - which looked at different climates globally. We have also been looking at seas and oceans of the world and thinking about the difference between the two. This coming week we shall be looking at maps (and map symbols!) and using our local area map to investigate and identify features yet further; however, as we are fast approaching the end of Term 3 - with only 2 weeks to go - we will be slowly looking to ‘wind up’ our geography topic before focusing on/dedicating/blocking our final week for Science – Materials and their Properties! More details to follow … ;)

Forest School remains on Wednesday mornings (10.00-11.30am) with our Outdoor P.E. session on Thursday afternoon (re: Performance Sport) as per our usual timetable (1.30-2.30pm); yet will additionally cover our phonics focus of Week 5: Adding endings to single-syllable words ending in a single consonant (e.g. pat/patted), Common Exception words of could, would, should and our special skill - Contractions: couldn’t, wouldn’t, shouldn’t

Maths continues with our multiplication and division unit after learning the two times table (up to 12 lots of 2 = 24) and using the language of multiplication. Mastering Number will be looking at near doubles whereby the children will continue to use their known doubles facts to derive near doubles; including our practical activities to link up any abstract recording of doubles/near doubles. We shall also be practising our knowledge of doubles by subitising doubles arrangements beyond 20 – recognising that near doubles can be created by adding 1 or subtracting 1 from a double. Following on from this, we will equally be learning that near doubles facts are always odd numbers because they are 1 more or 1 less than a double, which remain ever even.

On an additional ‘maths-based’ note, please never worry if you are unable to return our weekly maths homework by Friday of each week – as we are very flexible (I promise!) and always more than happy for them to arrive on any convenient day … even en masse! i.e. whichever way is easiest – and works best for your child/yourselves as a family …

This week will also be our ‘last’ of Moxie Mouse and Cat Capone – therefore, please do look out for a new whole class reading book imminently …; and as I said, again, to the children this week … “It is never too late to return a school book” – delighting in an unexpected copy of The Adventures of Chicken Little arriving only last week (which was first issued back in September!) :) Truly …

Wishing you all a lovely weekend - even after a rather nail-biting/very thrilling Friday afternoon ‘last-minute’ class treat (due to Mrs Greenwood’s re-count of class House Points following the whole school assembly on the 23rd) … and Highflyers, in fact, being named as the ‘winners’! A gorgeous way to tie up yet another superb week – including our Puzzling celebrations (see attached) … before National Storytelling Week begins in earnest on Monday morning - first thing :) Terrific stuff …

With very best wishes – as always,

Mrs Winters & ‘Team Highflyer’ :)
