Unicorn Class Term 3 Week 19 January 2026 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick)) |
Unicorn Class Blog Term 3 Week 1 Week Commencing 6th January 2026
All the children sound like they have had an amazing Christmas. Children are settling back into school routines and the new starters are settling in, building new relationships and learning new routines quickly.
Our topic this term is ‘Wonderful Winter’. We have been discussing the weather we may see in winter and clothes we may need to wear. The snow this week was on their minds and mentioned a lot. We have shared and discussed a range of wintery books. We talked about when we have our winter in England and the weather is cold in some other countries it is warm. We have enjoyed making wintery scenes using collage materials and paint. We made snowflakes using circle paper, some of us folded the paper and cut out shapes and made snips using scissors. We were excited and amazed when we opened them up.
We explored water that was frozen, snow and shaving foam, we commented that it felt “cold”, “freezing”, “slippery”, “white”, “wet” and “the ice felt hard but the foam felt soft and squelchy”.
This week we have also been very curious about magnets. We used the magnetic to find different items that stuck to the magnet. Barney commented, “The magnet sticks to this nail because it is made of metal.”
Outside we have particularly enjoyed watching the snow falling, watching squirrels, doing winter hunts, using our new winter shop, playing with the moulds and diggers in the sand and using our imagination to make delicious food with the pasta, such as strawberry and banana smoothies.
During our hall time we moved in different ways whilst we played our traffic light game. Some of the ways included running like cheetahs, slithering like snakes and walking like crabs. We enjoyed playing, ‘Shark’s coming’ and were really good at jumping onto the islands. We also enjoyed doing an obstacle course using gym equipment.
Our main maths focus this week has been counting and matching numerals to amounts. We have enjoyed doing this through counting songs, counting items on our snack plate, playing games such as ‘Counting in the ocean’ and fishing games using the magnets.
During phonics we have been recapping rhyming, alliteration, oral segmenting and oral blending.
There has been great ideas and team work going on with building models using Mobillo, Duplo, Lego, the magnetic tiles and small bricks.
Next week we will be learning about Polar Regions as part of this we will be building igloos and exploring animals that live in the Arctic and Antarctica.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you next week for more exploring.
Best wishes
Mrs Fenwick
