Unicorn Class Term 1 Week 610 October 2025 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick)) |
Unicorn Class Blog Term 1 Week 6 Week Commencing 6th October 2025
This week in the Unicorn’s class we have enjoyed learning how to care for pets and animals. We learnt that like us they need food, water, exercise, to play, kindness and to be treated with respect. However, we learnt that unlike us if pets and animals are poorly, hurt or needing an immunisation/booster they may go to see a vet/ veterinary nurse at a veterinary surgery. Whereas, we may see a doctor/nurse/dentist at a doctor’s surgery or dental surgery. We have all enjoyed using the veterinary surgery role play area. We were good at making appointments, caring for the pets, checking them over, bandaging and giving the pets injections when needed and writing out prescriptions. We listened to and discussed ‘Mog and the V.E.T’ by Judith Kerr and children have been discussing their own experiences of vets.
We have enjoyed learning about different roles of Farmers and tractors on farms, using the small world farm and sharing nonfiction and fiction books. The information book about tractors was very popular with children showing lots of curiosity with the questions being asked. Some of us wanted to draw and paint farm pictures. Some of us wanted to paint rainbows. We have been doing the ‘The farmers in their den’ and other ring games.
This week we have also enjoyed making apple and pear crumble. We very carefully used the knife to cut apples and pears into small pieces. We then made the crumble mix for the top of the apple and pear by scooping flour into a bowl and mixing it together with butter and a little bit of sugar. When it was all mixed up we enjoyed sprinkling it to the top of the fruit. It was put in the oven. We thought it smelled delicious when it was cooking and the feedback was that it tasted “yummy”, “good”, “delicious” too.
During phonics we have been using rhythm and rhyme with a rhyme called ‘Myself’ One of the games we played was called, ‘Stand up, Sit down’, where two words from the rhyme were chosen. If they rhymed, the children stood up after they heard them. (e.g., nose/toes) If they did not rhyme they remained seated (e.g. toes/see).
Our main maths focus this week has been recognising 3 objects without having to count them, we have used acorns, fossils, bricks, cotton balls and even noticed leaves and fruits on our plate e.g. “I have 2 slices of banana for the eyes, 2 apple eye brows and one apple mouth.
Outside we have been climbing and balancing, making dens, playing hide and seek, using the wobble ball, making obstacle courses, making large pictures using the chalk, making autumn collections, sweeping the leaves, using the wheelbarrows, balance bikes and playing in the sand.
We have also enjoyed constructing the magnetic tiles, Mobillo, Duplo and little bricks.
If you have not received your parent’s evening slip, you will get it next time your child is in. Please go through the office if you would like to make any changes.
Next week we will be continuing with our ‘All about me topic’ and having a ‘Pumpkin Soup’ theme which will include using puppets and pretending to make pumpkin soup like in the story. We will also be making pictures of our family. You are welcome to bring in a photograph of family members or send me an email with pictures to share.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you all next week for more exploring.
Best wishes
