The Week Ahead ...

10 October 2025 (by Abigail Winter (awinter))

T1 W6 – The Week ahead …

Yet another super week for Highflyer Class this week – including the unexpected appearance of a Glis Glis from within a bird box during our Forest School session (ably filmed, and shared, by the wonderful Diana!) on Wednesday followed by a fantastic LIVE Henley Literary Festival screening featuring Andy Day and his latest Dino Dad storybook yesterday! A virtual trip to Antarctica also helped us understand 'What a cold place is really like and how it compares to the U.K.?; with the children all fascinated by the descriptions and different stories recounted as well as seeing some stunning close-ups photos of the animals and birds who merrily live there.

As with last week, we shall happily be continuing our Kapow geography topic work whilst learning about different climates and weather conditions – in addition to thinking about where various climate zones appear on a world map.  We shall also be discussing our own weather this week and then using compass directions outside on the playground and – hopefully – within the walled garden! Therefore, please do keep an eye out for our chalk patterns/recording marks throughout the coming week …!?

Phonics and Spellings

This week the phonic focus is:

Week 6 - Long /u/ + endings to split digraph words / other words ending in ‘e’

Please do remember to pop school planners into school every day if at all possible …

Reading

We will be switching our Class/Group Reading book this week – following on from National Poetry Day on the 2nd - to ‘Animal Poems'; given our recent class discussions about our love of nature plus greater curiosity, and interest, in local, national and international ecosystems.

However, if any copies of our non-fiction text - Extreme Earth could now be whizzed back into school (at your earliest convenience) that would be greatly appreciated. We shall also be learning how to use ou First/Junior dictionaries to not only find but equally understand the meanings of new ‘target’ words.

Maths

This week our mastering number unit is focussed on the children developing recall of the bonds of 10. The representations used this week – a 10-frame, fingers and individual rekenreks – will draw attention to the different ways of composing 10; including opportunities to practise recalling bonds of 10 (both when working practically but also with expressions and equations).

Our other focus shall remain within learning about addition and subtraction; with a particular focus on our own understanding as to how they are intrinsically linked together.

Partnership Sports Event

Monday 13th October   1.15-2.45pm

Year 1/2 Cross Country Races at Langtree School, Woodcote. Races - Year 1 boys, Year 1 girls, Year 2 boys, Year 2 girls.

All the children are really looking forward to this exciting event on Monday (with both classes travelling there and back ‘together’ via a beautifully comfy coach), however, as a visiting school we did receive some additional information form the member of staff in charge (from Langtree who organises the event). Given it was written in bold and CAPITAL LETTERS I am assuming that they wished us to express its importance – hence thought, for clarification purposes if nothing else, to attach below.

TO CLARIFY, IF YOU NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS TO HELP TRANSPORT/ACCOMPANY YOUR TEAM TO THIS EVENT, THEY ARE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE SCHOOL GROUNDS WITH YOU. HOWEVER, PARENTS CANNOT JUST TURN UP THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON TO WATCH.

PARENTS ARE NOT ABLE TO ATTEND THIS EVENT AS IT TAKES PLACE BEFORE 3PM.

I promise, however, to ensure that we shall take plenty of photographs – (and share according) – with Miss Wall, Mrs Coleman, Miss Smith, Mrs Shrimpton and myself all accompanying the children – and already ready to cheer them ALL on … before we return to school ‘in good time’ for the end of the day, pick-ups at 3.30pm and/or our regular After School activities/clubs as planned!

And finally …

Just a quick reminder from Mrs Greenwood, this afternoon, for all staff to remind our wonderful parents to check our class/your child’s planners for any parent evening slips (with a gentle footnote – additionally – for any parent who might like to make any changes to, please, go through Mrs Sedwell/Mrs Beirne in our fantastic school office … as your first port of call!)

With MANY thanks and wishing you all another lovely week!

Best wishes – as always

Mrs Winters (Abi) and the Fabulous Year 2 ‘Team’
