The Week Ahead ...

3 October 2025 (by Abigail Winter (awinter))

Week Beginning 6th October …

This week we really enjoyed celebrating National Poetry Day yesterday (Thursday); from sharing poems within the school as a whole and then equally listening to our very own (composed by our amazing Year 2 poets and recited so brilliantly to an avid audience!). Michael Rosen successfully came out on top – with three of his poems providing moments of real laughter before we ALL had great fun again today enjoying our terrific skipping workshop (straight after first break!) and on the playground afterwards.

This week in our geography topic work we shall be, once again, thinking about 'What a hot place is like’; yet this time around we shall will be looking at weather, examining different climates, discussing seasons and – hopefully - finding out more about the plants and animal life.  For our new English text, as a class, we be reading ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ by Lynne Cherry – whereby we are hoping to immerse ourselves in her wonderful picture book about rainforest protection and conservation – considering the two woodcutters who stop beside the large Ceiba tree but become lulled by the heat and the hum of the forest. Exciting stuff …

Phonics and Spellings

This week our phonic focus is: Week 5 - Long /o/ (/oa/oe/o_e/ow/) + endings to split digraph words and other words ending in ‘e’.

Please remember to pop school planners into school bags/school each day if at all possible … alongside the children’s numbered/individual Group Reading Book – as proves hugely helpful … and greatly appreciated!

Reading

We will be continuing with our reading book, non-fiction text - Extreme Earth; this week given we are really enjoying it – and are continuing to find out related facts and, additionally deepening our understanding as to how a 'fact' book is structured (and what features are included).

Maths

This week the mastering number unit is focussed on the children exploring number compositions. The representations used this week – 10-grids linked to Numberblocks, Rekenreks and the Hungarian number pattern – will, hopefully, draw attention to the different ways of composing earlyl two digit numbers. They will also recap the position of 10 in the linear number system; relating numbers to other numbers to support our number sense (e.g.1 more than and 1 less than  numbers respectively), as well as relating digits to their key ‘anchors’.  Our other unit of maths moves on from place value to looking at addition and subtraction – and, equally, how they are ultimately linked together.

Forest School – we are now in ‘full flow’ re: our Wonderful Wednesday outdoor learning; therefore, please do remember to wear ‘Forest School kits’ into school – although welly boots in a separate bag if at all possible – so the children are able to walk into Singing Assembly (in the Hall) first thing in their indoor/normal school shoes. We have been able to cheekily commandeer the ‘blue bench’ to the left-hand side of our classroom door (as we exit) – so promise to do our very best to match up all boots into beautiful pairs ready for pick up at 3.30pm!

Science Week is just around the corner … so please do continue to watch this space! As one to be eagerly anticipated and equally enjoyed … :)

Many thanks and wishing you all another lovely week ahead …

Best – as always,

Mrs Winters and the Fabulous Year 2 Team
