Unicorn Class Term 5 Week 5

24 May 2025 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog                                 Term 5 Week 5                 Week Commencing 19th May 2025

Unicorn Class had another wonderful week of exploring, we were very excited at the beginning of the week when the first butterflies had emerged from their chrysalis. We were fascinated on Tuesday during our hello song when the final butterfly emerged from its Chrysalis. On Thursday we took the butterflies to the walled garden to say our final goodbyes. We have loved observing the life cycle of butterflies and learnt so much from it such as, “Butterflies suck up nectar from flowers through their tongues.”, “Our caterpillars were small,  they ate lots of food, then they got really big and went upside down. They made chrysalis, there was lots of silk. Then a butterfly came out of the chrysalis.” and “When our butterflies are bigger they may lay eggs.”

We have also had 2 tortoises, Norman and Norma, who came to visit our class this week. We loved observing them and had lots of amazing questions such as “What do tortoises eat?, “Why are they not eating their food?”, ”Do tortoises swim?”, “Where do tortoises lay eggs?’ “Why do they have patterns on their back?”, “

We have had a shape focus this week, we have discussed shape faces on blocks and magnet shapes whilst making models. Searching for shapes in our environment and using the Tap tap shapes with nails and hammers to make pictures.

During phonics we have been doing our alphabet chant, revisiting letter sounds, oral blending and segmenting whilst playing Georgie's Gym, searching for rhyming wording and recapping alliteration.

We have enjoyed drawing our own designs for our own Supertato and then making them using a real potato. Some of us decided to make traps using construction to catch the evil escapee. We discussed how our traps would work. This week we have also been using our senses to explore vegetables and we made and tried carrot and courgette cake.

Some of the other activities we have enjoyed this week are using the marble run, puzzles, using the large blocks and cars to make towers and roads, playing with babies and water play.

Thank you for all your wow slips, if you did not get a chance to complete one for your child, you are welcome to bring it in after half term.

Next term our topic is ‘What will we find in Space?’ We will also be having our school trip to Beale Park, a teddy bears picnic and Sports day.

I hope you all have a wonderful week.

Best wishes

Mrs Fenwick
