Week Ahead In Discovery 22.04.25

15 April 2025 (by Sonia Coles (scoles))

Welcome back to a short but very busy term 5. I hope you have all enjoyed the holidays and the glorious weather.

English lesson will be replaced on Tuesday, as we launch our geography topic " Are all settlements the same?" Children will learn the difference between a village, town and city. Learn about some of the cities in the UK and around the world, why people choose to live in a particular settlement, difference between urban and rural. They will also use a OS map of the local area.

English - learn how to write a newspaper report, include key features and previous and new SPaG learning (approximately 2 weeks).

Maths- New topic Fractions B. Please encourage your child to learn their times tables daily.

Thursday 24.04.25 There will be a talk on our fast approaching residential trip to Hill End. This is a great opportunity to find out more about the activities, accommodation (dorms), dietary requirements, clothes.

We have an exciting trip lined up on 28th and 29th April (morning only) to Merimole's Farm. Over the 2 days, the class will be split in half to accommodate needs, staff, etc. Children will use an OS map, discuss land use: arable v pasture, woodland, change of use over time – use of woods for furniture supplies, brick making, wartime camps, and how has changed, pollination, dispersal  and enjoy a ride on a tractor. Children will need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear based on the weather. We will return to school in time for lunch. Please be mindful PE will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

I've  attached our curriculum letter, along with the timetable for you to see. We will continue with our text from term 4, as it includes invasions and talks about settlements.

Homework - It would be great if children can find out a few facts about the different types of settlements and reasons why they've chosen to live there. For example, jobs, weather, physical features, etc. Learn and identify capital cities of neighbouring countries.

Thank you for you support and I look forward to seeing the children and you all next week. Enjoy the rest of the holidays!
