Unicorn Class Term 4 Week 5

30 March 2025 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog                     Term 4 Week 5                        Week Commencing 24th March 2025

We have been excited and enjoyed making shortbread biscuits, cards and pictures for all of our special Mummy's for Mother's Day. We hope you all have a lovely day and enjoy your biscuits.

We have loved using playdough, rollers and cutters to also make biscuits and cakes. We have continued to enjoy the home corner, dressing up, choosing and working out how to put clothes on the babies and make menus for a police café.

Outside we have worked together using our large loose parts to make obstacle courses and dens. We have enjoyed digging and using the wheel burrows to transport sand, mud, cones and sticks. The mud kitchen has been used to make delicious looking food. We have enjoyed going on adventures with our rucksacks, decorating pots and making paper flowers to go into them. We enjoyed using bubbly water to give the cars and diggers a wash. We played quoits and saw how many rings we could throw onto the posts. Some of us wanted to record how many points we had scored. Climbing on the climbing frame and using the balance bikes has also been popular.

During our PE session in the hall, we moved around the hall in different ways such as skipping, running, jumping, hopping and played ‘What's the time Mr Wolf’ and ‘Grandma's footsteps’. Ruby commented that on Peppa pig she had seen the animals play this game but she had never played it before and it was her first time. We also play ring games, including ‘Ring a Ring o’ Roses’, ‘Duck, Duck, Goose!’ and we learnt a counting dance song that we are going to dance along to with music next week.

During phonics this week we have continued to play rhyming games, alliteration and play Georgie’s Gym. We are continuing to learn the words and actions to our Alphabet chant. We have been learning the letters ‘b’ (The bat before the ball.’) and ‘f’ (The floppy flower falls). The writing cue we use to write the grapheme ‘b’ is ‘ Down the bat and around the ball.’ and ‘f’ is ‘Down the flower and across the leaves.’ We practiced writing ‘r’ and ‘h’ letters using our magic fingers in the air, in flour, using pencils and whiteboard pens. We also practised saying the sounds in words with these letters and breaking words down e.g. b-e-d bed and fed f-e-d.

Maths Our main Maths  focus this week has been counting and recognising numbers. Some of the activities we have been taking part with are counting how many children are  in our class, how many plates/cups are needed at each table, looking at numbers to see how many slices of fruit we can take, doing number puzzles, counting animals/cars/teddies etc.,  and we have been taking part with number songs such as One elephant went out to play. We also enjoyed using 5 and 10 frame buses to work out how many people were on the bus and how many spaces were left for more people to get on.

We have been using the blocks and magnetic shapes to make homes and garages. Charlie helped another child by explaining that if they needed more squares they could put 2 of the rectangles together to make a square or 2 triangles, he then showed the kind of triangles they would need to use.

Whilst you are out and about and in your home with your child/children see if you can be number detectives spotting numbers together in the environment.

We would like to add herb plants to our mud kitchen area if you have any spare plants that you would be able to donate that would be deeply appreciated.

Next week we will be making Eid Mubarak cards and having some festive food to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan.

We will also be doing Easter Crafts including making rabbit ears, baskets and going on Easter egg hunts

Hope you are all having a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you soon.

Best wishes

Mrs Fenwick
