Unicorn Class Term 4 Week 316 March 2025 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick)) |
Unicorn Class Blog Term 4 Week 3 Week Commencing 10th March 2025
This week has been another exciting week of exploring.
Outside we enjoyed throwing and catching balls, throwing paper aeroplanes. We have continued to love using our large loose parts area to make dens and have as a construction site. Some of us decided that the road needed repairing, the cones were put out to make the road workers safe and to show the vehicles where to go, another child set up traffic lights to control the traffic. The drivers of the vehicles drove slowly and carefully around the road works following the arrows and road workers instructions. The backpacks, pencil cases, note books and magnifying glasses have been popular too.
During Forest school we did good problem solving to work out ways to climb, slide and swing. We loved looking for minibeasts. We moved logs and discovered worms, woodlice, slugs, a centipede and a millipede.
In the pond we discovered frogs spawn, we were very curious as to find out more about where it came from, what would come out of it and how tadpoles would grow. Some of us also spotted a water boatman, we were fascinated by the way it skated across the top of the pond’s surface. We also noticed pond snails in the pond against the side and 2 on a water plant.
This week we have been exploring mixing colours using paint, playdough and coloured water. We particularly enjoyed choosing 2 colours, painting one hand one colour and the other hand the other colour then rubbing them together to make a new colour. We learnt that yellow and blue makes green, yellow and red makes orange, blue and red makes purple and when all the colours were mixed together it made a brown colour.
Our main maths focus this week has been counting, recognising numbers, matching numbers to quantities and problem solving. As part of this we have enjoyed listening to Emma Jane’s aeroplane and counting how many animals were on her plane. We enjoyed pretending chairs were an aeroplane and seeing how many children were getting on and off the aeroplane. We have also enjoyed taking part with number rhymes such as Five green speckled frogs, and 5 currant buns. We worked out questions such as ‘How many frogs on the log?’ ‘There are 3 frogs on the log, how many have jumped into the pool?’ etc. We have also been doing fantastic counting during snack time.
During phonics this week we have continued to play rhyming games, and play Georgie’s Gym. We are continuing to learn the words and actions to our Alphabet chant. We have been learning the letters ‘e’ (Every elephant enters.’) and ‘u’ (The upside-down umbrella is unusual). The writing cue we use to write the grapheme ‘e’ is ‘Under his ear and around his trunk.’ and ‘u’ is ‘Under the umbrella, up and down.’ We practiced writing ‘e’ and ‘u’ letters using our magic fingers in the air and using pencils and whiteboard pens.
We listened to ‘Kindness Red’ by Ibtihaj Muhammad, we discussed what the characters in the book did that had been kind and times we had done something kind. In the book the teacher had made a list of different worlds children would like such as Ice-cream, Unicorn and Kindness World. We then thought of our own ideas for worlds we would like, drew pictures and talked about what it would be like.
Thank you for letting me know how your child/children have been helping at home, children have also been sharing with me, which I have been able to put on a leaf. If there is anything else, please let me know and it can be added to a special leaf.
Next week we will be having a theme of ‘People who help us’ as part of this we will be looking at and making emergency vehicles. If you have any empty cereal boxes, milk bottle tops, lids or items that you think would be suitable to use, please can you bring them in.
Hope you are all having a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you next week.
Best wishes
Mrs Fenwick
