Unicorn Class Blog Term 3 Week 6 Week Commencing 10th February 2025
We have been thinking about people who are special to us and making valentines day cards, some of us noticed that the word Mummy had three ‘m’ in, Daddy had three ‘d’ in and ‘m’ and ‘d’ were our special letters we have been learning this week. We used our fine motor skill to draw pictures, write inside, select and stick hearts on our cards. We also carefully threaded red pasta on pipe cleaners to make bracelets. We have enjoyed making and using playdough to make special hearts, birthday cakes, pizza, presents and families of hedgehogs.
We have loved choosing, listening to and discussing a range of books. We looked at the map on the endpapers of ‘10 Minutes Until Bedtime’ by Rhiannon Fielding and Chris Chatterton and discussed where we would like to live or definitely would not like to live and why such as “I would not like to live in the stinky swamp because it would be smelly and a crocodile lives there”, ‘I would like to live here because then I could see a mermaid every day’. During our snack times we have noticed some wood pigeons and robins come to visit our outside area to have a snack too. We were very quiet so we did not scare them away.
During phonics this week we have continued to enjoy looking at and noticing rhyming. We have been playing listening games such as matching the animal sound to the correct animal. We are continuing to learn the words and actions to our Alphabet chant. We have been learning the letters ‘m’ (The man marches on mountains) and ‘d’ (Don’t disturb the dinosaurs). The patter we use when writing the grapheme ‘m’ is ‘From the man go down, climb one mountain then the other’ and ‘d’ is ‘Around his back then head to toe.’ We practiced writing ‘m’ and ‘d’ letters using our magic fingers, pencils and pens. Whilst making cards lots of us recognised that Mummy begins with a ‘M’ and that Daddy begins with a ‘D’.
We have been having lots of opportunities to practice our counting skills whilst playing counting games using dice such as the Ladybird game, matching numbers to quantities, singing number songs, using the Numicon and pegs, making sure there are enough cups and plates for everyone, checking to make sure our models had the same amount of wheels each side etc.
We have been exploring Mobillo, joining pieces together to make trains, racing cars, and planes.
This week has been Internet safety week. As part of this we had a PowerPoint and quiz about Internet safety. We helped Smartie the Penguin to be safe on his new tablet. We told him to tell his grown up if there was something that made him feel scared or worried, when someone asked his name, where he lived and also if there was something that he thought was not quite right like polar bears living on a beach in a hot country. We enjoyed using the iPad to play suitable games, we used the timer to help us with sharing.
Outside we have loved making dens using cardboard, climbing trees and the climbing frame, playing ‘What's the time Mr Wolf’, making potions and using the large blocks to build. We made obstacle courses using stepping stones and foam shapes to play ‘The floor is lava’. This week during our hall time we used the parachute to play games such as ‘Cat and mouse’ and ‘Flying dog’. Mrs Fenwick and Zoe were really impressed that we were all able to take our socks and shoes off independently and put them back on after even when we found it difficult, we kept trying and were very pleased when we achieved putting them on.
The school has got an outdoor weather clothing swap shop. When your child has grown out of their outdoor weather clothes please take a look just inside the school by the main reception. If you would like to make a donation, the outdoor clothing must be in good condition e.g. still waterproof and no holes in. Again once your child has outgrown it, if it is still in good condition please bring it back for others to use.
Our topic next term is ‘Wheels, wings or walking?’
Hope you all have a lovely week next week and look forward to seeing you all the following week.
Best wishes
Mrs Fenwick
