Unicorn Class Term 3 Week2

19 January 2025 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog                     Term 3 Week 2                         Week Commencing 14th January 2025

The Unicorn Class loved having Little City coming to school this week, it was lovely to see children exploring and getting into different roles of people who help us. There have been lots of discussions around what children would like to be when they grow up and the reasons why, what their parents do and times they have used the services of people who help us. We shared All Through the Night: The People Who Work While We Sleep by Polly Faber and Harriet Hobday and ‘A Superhero Like You’ by Ranj Singh.

This week we have also loved exploring the Polar Regions, we loved learning about the animals that live there, we wanted to find out what they eat because they could not go to the shop. We enjoyed playing with the small world animals, looking at igloos and different  homes. We had the opportunity to try and make igloos and towers using sugar cubes and salt. We learnt that Antarctica is very extremely cold, the coldest place on earth. Penguins, some seals, sea lions, octopuses and whales live there. We listened to the story, ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. Different emotions of the penguin and boy were discussed. Also whether we had ever lost anything and how we felt when we found it again. We were also curious as to the meaning of the words lonely, ignore and suitcase. Ruby told everyone a suitcase is a bit like a lunch box but bigger and you can put clothes in. If we were going to go to the Polar regions it was decided that we would pack lots of warm clothes like we wear in the winter in England such as jumpers, hats, gloves and have a very warm coat. Some children wanted to make boats using boxes to go on adventures. Whilst others decided to paint pictures from the story of the penguin, boy, boat and whale using water colours. Charlie and Jamie were very interested in exploring mixing the paints to make new colours and telling others what colours they could mix to make a new colour.

Our maths focus this week has been exploring and using positional language such as on top of, inside, next to, under, behind and beside. We have enjoyed looking for the Arctic animals and saying where they were found. The blocks were put on top of each other and beside to make homes, parks, towers and castles for the bears, knights, Kings, Queens and horses to go inside of, on top of, in the front of and next too.

During phonics this week we used the Incey Wincey nursery rhyme to revisit using voice sounds, oral blending and segmenting, rhythm and rhyme.

Outside we have enjoyed laying the foam shapes out, moving around trying to stay on top of them. The climbing frame was also popular.  We carefully threaded cheerios to make bird food to hang on the tree for the birds, used playdough and sticks to make people, robots and lollies. We used the brooms to collect up a big pile of leaves. We were fascinated by a very big worm we found in the leaves. The chunky chalks were used to make pictures. We loved exploring the walled garden. We noticed it looked different from last time we went because the snow had all melted.

This week we will be continuing our winter topic and learning about Lunar New Year.

Hope you are having a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you all next week for more exploring.

Best wishes
