Highflyer Class Term 1 Week 7 14 Oct 24

11 October 2024 (by Dorothy Wyatt (dwyatt))

Last week we had a visitor to the class, Mr Hugh Piper from Wallingford.   He had recently visited Kenya (July 24) and we invited him to talk about his first-hand experiences and help us understand  'What a hot place is like and how it compares to the U.K.?  The class were fascinated with all the descriptions and the different stories that were recounted as well as seeing some stunning close-ups photos of the wild animals they have there.  Who knew that lions do huge yawns before they chase their prey to give them extra oxygen or that mosquitoes love the colour blue? So don't wear any blue clothes when you're there!

This week in our geography topic work we are learning the difference between climate and weather and thinking about where different climate zones appear on a world map.  We will be discussing our weather this week and using compass directions outside in the playground and the walled garden.

Phonics and Spellings

This week the phonic focus is:

Week 6 - Long /u/ + endings to split digraph words / other words ending in ‘e’

Please remember to send the school planner into school every day.

Reading

We are reading books related to our topic of 'Hot and Cold'.

We continue with our reading book, non-fiction text - Extreme Earth.  We are learning how to use a dictionary to find and understand the meanings of new words.

Maths

This week the mastering number unit is focussed on the children developing recall of the bonds of 10. The representations used this week – a 10-frame, fingers and the rekenrek – will draw attention to the different ways of composing 10. The children will have opportunities to practise recalling bonds of 10 both when working practically and also with expressions and equations.

Our other focus is learning about addition and subtraction and understanding how they are linked together.

Forest School - Please note there is no Forest School this week - October15th.  Please wear P.E. kit as normal.

Many thanks and have a lovely week!
