Unicorn Class Term 1 Week 4

29 September 2024 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog                    Term 1 Week 4                Week Commencing 23rd September 2024

This week in the Unicorn’s class we have enjoyed listening to different versions of The Little Red Hen and discussing the story. We made bread like the Little Red Hen. However, we worked together unlike the farm animals in the story. We listened carefully to the instructions and enjoyed scooping, pouring, stirring and kneading. We were fascinated by how much rising our bread rolls did during proofing. The bread smelt delicious when it was cooked and we were very excited about tasting it. We have enjoyed using the farm animals to make up our own stories. Some of us have been making our own stories.

During Forest School this week, some of the children decided to turn the pots and pans from the mud kitchen into a drum kit and then explored the different sounds made by the different containers. They found different sticks and discovered this also changed the sounds made. We had a lot of fun creating a big puddle using the rainwater, and then taking it in turns to splash in it. We noticed the mud got very squelchy, sticky and slippery.   We helped Libby get some more water using the containers and wheel barrows. Nolan spotted a butterfly in one of the wheel barrows, which was very tame and we were very interested in observing.

This week children have been working together to turn empty boxes into forts, buses, tractors, robots and even the 3 Little pigs houses.

During maths we have had a shape focus which has included completing puzzles, going on shape hunts, selecting pre-cut shapes to make Little Red Hen pictures, using shapes to make homes and slides for the teddies. Using the shapes as snacks for the hungry dinosaur. Informal and mathematical language around the shapes has been used whilst taking part in these activities.

During phonics children have been completing rhyming words in books and rhymes. Discussing words beginning with the same sound as different names. Max noticed that Friday began with a F like in Freddie’s name.

We have enjoyed making ramps for cars and using paint to make wheel tracks on our pictures. The trains have also been very popular again this week with different routes being made, lots of good sharing and taking turns sometimes using the sand timers. We have also enjoyed bathing the babies in the water tray and when they were dry getting them dressed. We noticed some of the babies had very small clothes.

Next week we will be continuing with our ‘All about me topic’ and having a Harvest/Autumn theme which will include autumn walks, exploring vegetables and making soup.

Just a reminder Forest School is on Wednesday. Please can your child/children come to school in their Forest school clothes, waterproof and bring a change of clothes.

If you have any empty yoghurt pots at home please can you bring them in this week.

Hope you all are having a lovely weekend and looking forward to seeing you all this week for more exploring.

Best wishes

Mrs Fenwick
