Highflyer Class Term 1 Week 420 September 2024 (by Dorothy Wyatt (dwyatt)) |
This week in our geography topic work we are thinking about 'cold' places and reading the class book 'Lost and Found'. Our writing in English is linked to our topic work as we learn more about the North and South Poles.
Phonics and Spellings
This week the phonic focus is: Week 3 - Long /e/ + endings to split digraph words / other words ending in ‘e’
/ ee / ea / -y / e / ie / e_e /
Please remember to send the school planner into school every day.
Reading
Our reading book is a tradtional tale about 'Chicken Little'. We will complete the book this week. Please remember to send it into school every day. We have discussion in depth about plot, characters and settings, making predictions and deductions and studying why the author uses specific words at certain places. We will also think about what deeper message the author might trying to communicate through a story and learn how books can offer more than just reading the text. We look at performing the story and being 'storytellers' with different character voices and making the story 'come alive' as we read it together. Additionally, there will be a 'free choice' book to bring home as well.
Maths
There will be mastering number and problem solving every week. This week the children will revisit and reason about the composition of even numbers. They will begin by recapping that even numbers can be made by combining 2 numbers that are the same, and that this can be described using the language of ‘double _____ is _____’. They will represent doubles on their fingers, on 10-frames and on a part–part–whole diagram, relating this to addition equations. They will then use 10 as a starting point to explore whether the parts that combine to make an even number are odd or even. This will help the children to begin to generalise that even numbers can be made with either 2 odd numbers OR 2 even numbers. The unit of maths continuing is place value - this week focussed on partitioning numbers (1-100)
Maths Homework - We hope you all found one homework sheet last Friday. These need to be handed back in by next Friday. If there are any queries about completion of the questions, please encourage your child to bring their homework before the Friday to speak to us in the classroom.
Forest School is again on Tuesday afternoon. Don't forget your change of clothes!
Many thanks and have a lovely week!
