Unicorn Class Term 1 Week 1

8 September 2024 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog                    Term 1 Week 1                Week Commencing 2nd September 2024

We have all settled beautifully into the Unicorn class and enjoyed making new friendships, exploring our Unicorn classroom together and learning new routines.

We have enjoyed sharing ‘Giraffes can't dance’ by Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees. There have been lots of discussions around the feelings of Gerald the giraffe, animals in the story and some children shared their experiences about when they had seen these animals, such as when they visited the zoo or park.

We listened and watched different kinds of music and dances from the story such as Waltzing like the warthogs and Rock and Rolling like the hippos then we created our own music and dances. Some of us painted pictures of Gerald the giraffe dancing. We have enjoyed using paint, felt tips and collage materials to make handprint unicorn pictures.

We shared ‘Things I like’ by Anthony Browne. We then took it in turns to say something we like, some of us painted and drew pictures of this.

We have loved watching the busy squirrels carrying small apples in their mouths and digging small holes to bury them, searching for sparkling spider webs, spiders, snails and going on a dinosaur hunt. Outside we also enjoyed exploring puddles and playing hide and seek in the rain, we were good at taking turns to be the seeker. Some of us noticed the changing colour of leaves and that some of them had fallen off the trees, Sophie told everyone it was now autumn.

The train track has been very popular with good teamwork, dinosaurs were added to create a dinosaur land and stories developed around this. Dinosaurs have been very popular this week with the dry sand being changed into a wet dinosaur swamp. The home corner has also been very popular with delicious smoothies being made, lots of tea, coffee and food being prepared, dressing up and playing with the babies. We were able to use the rolling pins, cutters and our hands to make a range of items in the playdough.

We carefully used wooden shapes, nails and hammers to create pictures on our boards, such as “A monster truck with lots of round wheels”, “Boats”, “Robots’ and “A fire engine with wheels and long straight hoses”. We also enjoyed problem solving to work out where the different shapes went in the puzzles.

We have also been enjoying and taking part with a range of nursery rhymes and stories, some of us pointed out some of the rhyming words within some of these.

Next week we will be continuing with our ‘All about me topic’ and having a 3 Little Pig's theme.

Every Wednesday we have Forest School starting this coming Wednesday. Please can you make sure your child/children have a change of clothes, wellies and waterproof clothing  (We do have some spares if your child/children does not have any).

Best wishes
