Highflyer Class Term1 Week 2

6 September 2024 (by Dorothy Wyatt (dwyatt))

Last week was such a wonderful three days start to the year.   It has been lovely finding out about each other and how we can work as a team to 'fit together'.  Our work has produced a fantastic display for the classroom as well as discussing how we can 'do our best' every day.

This week there are new subjects, new books and more finding out where things are as well as starting on our learning journey.   Forest School starts this week - please bring in a change of waterproof outdoor clothes and footwear with T-shirts with long sleeves and long trousers.   This is because arms and legs should be covered for safety reasons.

Phonics and Spellings

Phonics is every day and any writing activities are brought together in a 'Jungle Club' booklet.   There is a specific focus each week and the weekly spellings are based on the words being learnt during the week.  Spellings will be given on a Wednesday to be tested the following Wednesday.  New spellings will be stuck in your child's planner on that weekly page so you are able to practice these together at home over the week.

This week the focus is:Term 1 Week 1 - Long /a/ + endings to split digraph words.

Reading

The class reading book will be given out about every two weeks.  This week is a tradtional tale about 'Chicken Little'. We will discuss in depth about plot, characters and settings, making predictions and deductions and studying why authors use different techniques to give enjoyment to the reader  We will also think about what deeper message the author might trying to communicate through a story and learn how books can offer more than just reading the text.   Additionally, there will be a 'free choice' book to bring home as well.

Your child will be allocated a number which they will have throughout the year.  The books are numbered as well and will be matched to your child's number.   Although these class reading books will be going home, please ensure they are brought in everyday to be used for the reading activities.

Maths

There will be mastering number and problem solving every week.    The unit of maths starting this week is place value - recognising numbers, reading numbers and writing numbers.  (1-100)   A maths homework sheet will be sent home on a Friday to be handed back in by the following Friday.   This will be linked to the learning for that week.  If there are any queries about completion of the questions, please encourage your child to bring their homework before the Friday to speak to us in the classroom.

Forest School starts this week on Tuesday afternoon.  Don't forget your change of clothes!

Many thanks and have a lovely week!
