Unicorn Class Term 6 Week 3

22 June 2024 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog                    Term 6 Week 3                Week Commencing 17th June 2024

This week we have continued to enjoy learning more about space with a sun focus. Which has been perfect being that it has been sunny, hot and the Summer solstice.

We have been fascinated by shadows that have been made by objects blocking out the sunlight and at different times of the day that our shadows look different. We made a giant sun and remembered that the planets revolve around the sun, even earth (The planet we live on). We made our own sparkly suns and star pictures. We learnt that the sun is actually a star but it looks bigger than other stars because the sun is closer to earth. We have been discussing that the sun is very hot and ways that we can keep safe in the sun, such as wearing sun hats, sun lotion and drinking plenty to keep rehydrated.

During Forest school this week we enjoyed taking it in turns to start our own mini fires using a shell, Vaseline, cotton wool, flint and fire starter. The fire was also very hot like the sun. We listened carefully to keep ourselves and others safe. We have also enjoyed working together to make dens, playing with water, using water colours, playing hide and seek, climbing and having a picnic snack outside.

We have been sharing more space books and discussing what we would see and what we would take with us if we were travelling to Space.

We have enjoyed exploring frozen fruit in ice, and we worked out ways to get the fruit out such as using a spoon and water. We noticed that some of the fruits such as strawberries and blueberries felt different when they were frozen, they felt very cold and hard. Once the ice had melted and the fruits had defrosted we noticed that they felt softer and squishy than before. We have loved preparing different flavoured smoothies, soups, ice creams, milkshakes and pretending to try them.

We have been looking at different homes, discussing our homes and building different homes using blocks, stickle bricks and Lego. This even included a boat house made of Lego.

We have also been discussing who is in our family, we noticed there were some similarities and differences between our families. We drew pictures of our families. Some of us used collage materials to make pictures of family members.

This week in Maths we have been practising doing lots of counting, comparing numbers and matching the quantities to the amount. Each day we have had a vote on the book we would like, we have had a choice of two. We put our hand up for our vote, we counted how many children wanted each book and then worked out which book had the most votes. We used our fingers and number lines to help us work this out. We have been seeing how many teddies are going to go to space using the dice frame spaceship and Numicon. We have also enjoyed number songs such as 5 Little Men in a flying saucer.

During phonics this week we enjoyed playing Georgie's gym. We have learnt the letter sound x and y, we noticed that lots of words with ‘x’ in had the sound 'x' at the end of the word, such as fox, box, fix and mix. We enjoyed practising writing the ‘x’ and the ‘y’. We noticed the X on the map in the book, ‘Peppa Pig and the Treasure Hunt.’ We have been playing listening games, seeing if we can work out what is making the sound and have continued to enjoy rhyming books, games and nursery rhymes.

This week some of us have pretended to be a teacher, making registers and taking the register. We have enjoyed caring for the babies and making picnics. We have also enjoyed using playdough to make lots of different things, such as worms and other animals.

This week we started practising our races for Sports Day. We listened and looked carefully at the demonstrations and then enjoyed taking part in the different races when it was our turn.

Next week we will be continuing to practise for sports day and we will be having a seaside theme.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to more exploring with you next week.

Best wishes

Mrs Fenwick
