Unicorn Class Term 6 Week 2

Unicorn Class Blog                    Term 6 Week 2                Week Commencing 10th June 2024

Wow, another exciting week of exploring for the Unicorn class.

On Monday we loved exploring the animals from farms2ewe visiting our school. We were very caring towards the animals. We were gentle when we stroked and touched the animals. Lots of us wanted to groom the pony (Sweetie) with her brushes. It was the first time the Ducklings had ever visited a school so we made sure we were quiet around them so that we did not frighten them and we loved watching them swim and splash around in the water tray. A calf (baby cow) called Ziggy came to visit us, we got told that he was bottle fed. A mother hen and her chicks came to visit us too, we knew that the chicks hatched from eggs that their mother had laid but we learnt that the mother hen was so caring that she was also looking after another chick from another hen. The mother hen let us feed and stroke her chicks but when it got colder the chicks went under her wings to keep warm. We loved feeding the goats and lambs grass, leaves and pellets, they loved it too. We kept the lambs safe by stopping them eating the waxy leaves that would make them poorly. We loved the way the lambs and goats skipped and leaped about. We were fascinated by the mice in their container and some of us wanted to hold a mouse, we did it very carefully with both hands and with help.

We enjoyed doing farm puzzles and making up stories with the plastic farm animals.

This week our paper mache planets were dry and ready to paint. We looked carefully at pictures of the 8 planets to work out what colours to use. Some of us noticed patterns that went around the planets.

This week during phonics we have been learning the ‘v’ and ‘w’ sound. We loved practising writing the ‘w’- going down the wriggly worm, up the wriggly worm, down the wriggly worm and up. We have also continued to enjoy noticing rhyming words, letters making up different words and have been attempting to write words during our play. Such as making registers, labelling our pictures and taking food orders.

In maths this week we have been practising doing lots of counting and matching amounts to numbers. After the register has been taken we have been counting the amount of children in our class that day. We have been noticing how many 10s and how many more e.g. When there was 16, there was one ten and 6 more. When there was 20 one child commented that there were “two tens”. We have been using magnetic shapes to make rockets, patterns and houses.

We made raisin cupcakes, we listen and followed the instructions carefully and enjoyed trying them at snack time.

During Forest School we painted Galaxies, we learnt that galaxies were made from stars, planets, gases and dirt. We also enjoyed making dens, playing with the toy ducks in the water, climbing trees and planting some of our bean plants in the walled garden. We enjoyed our strawberry and pear picnic snack.

Playing with Lego and Stickle bricks have been popular this week.

This week we have been discussing similarities and differences with us. We shared a book ‘The bear and the bees’  the bear sets out to teach the bees that it is okay to be different. We discussed the feelings of the characters and noticed the differences between the bees at the end of the story.

We have worked together to fill up our class marble jar, we discussed what reward we would like and most of us choose to have a ‘Wear your pyjamas to school day’. Therefore, on Tuesday 18th June, as a reward we are allowed to wear our pyjamas to school, for children not attending that day, we will discuss their reward.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes

Mrs Fenwick
