Unicorn Class Term 6 Week 1

7 June 2024 (by Rebecca Fenwick (rfenwick))

Unicorn Class Blog             Term 6 Week 1                Week Commencing 3rd May 2024

Wow, what a busy and exciting start of term. Our topic this term is ‘What will we find in space?’ As part of this we have been learning that there are 8 planets in our solar system, we have been learning a song about the 8 planets. We have been making planets out of paper mache, paper plates, drawing them and making space pictures. We have been making telescopes and rockets using junk modelling, crepe paper, pens, glue and tape. We listened to a real astronaut read ‘If I were an astronaut (Dream Big)’ in space. We were fascinated that when the astronaut let go of the book it floated around until she caught it, we learnt that this was because there is no gravity in space. We have been very curious and had lots of amazing questions. Nolan brought in an information book about space which we enjoyed finding answers to more of our questions. Outside we pretended we were astronauts going to the moon in our rockets, putting on our space suits, boots and helmets, riding moon buggies and jumping really high like astronauts. Then we pretended that we were being chased by aliens and had to run really fast, get into our rockets and fly back to earth. We shared, ‘The Alien’s are Coming’ by Colin McNaughton. We discussed the pictures, noticing similarities and differences. We then used clay to make aliens. Although all our aliens were similar because they were all made of clay. They all looked different because we used different amounts of eyes, legs, arms. Some had the same amount of legs but were different lengths.

Our topic this term for SCARF is valuing differences, with a focus this week on ‘Me and my Friends'. As part of this we listened to ‘Elmer’, discussed similarities and differences between the elephants and then in small groups discussed how we are similar and different to our friends.

We have been playing ‘Duck, Duck, Goose!’, Making sandcastles and ice-creams, climbing the climbing frame, playing the musical instruments, taking turns on the bikes and scooters, using the hula hoops and chalking big pictures. In the water tray we have been busy exploring wind up rockets propelling through the water and pouring.

During Forest School we enjoyed climbing, swinging on the swing and hammock, using long sticks to knock down stinging nettles, drawing, looking for minibeasts and playing pirates.

During phonics we have been rhyming, using alliteration, recapping all of the sounds we have learnt so far, orally segmenting and blending. We have been practising writing the letters, lots of us have wanted to use our letter knowledge to attempt to write on our pictures, cards and books we have been making.

We have loved sharing books, listening to each other tell stories and talk about the pictures.

During maths we have been using shapes to make pictures, finding the right shapes for puzzles, talking about shapes and singing number songs such as ‘5 Little men in a flying saucer’, ‘5 currant buns in a bakers shop’ and ‘5 Green speckled frogs’

The home corner has been very busy with children using the recipe book to make delicious food, pretending to be families and looking after the babies. Some of us pretended we were grownups helping the babies who had bumped into each other. The home corner has also been a café this week.

This week we have also enjoyed using blocks, Stickle bricks and Lego to make rockets, houses and aeroplanes.

Next week we will be continuing our space theme and on Monday we have Farms2ewe visiting. There is a £6.50 voluntary contribution, ParentPay for the Unicorn Class is now up and running.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend and look forward to more exploring with you next week.

Best wishes

Mrs Fenwick
