Week beginning 18 September 2023

Last week saw great improvement as everyone seemed to settling into the new routines and adjusting to Year 2. I think we were all pleased that the weather had cooled a little too.

Topic/English

We continue to learn new facts about our topic and it is lovely to see how interested the children are in finding out information. We have learnt about the Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill and listened to him say his famous speech and how it encouraged and motivated people to work together and be a team. We are using our facts to plan and write a fact file of parts that have interested us. It has been great how some of you have spoken of family history connecting WW2 and are bringing in information so far. Just to ask again if your family has any interesting information about experiences during the WW2 that is appropriate for Year 2, and you are happy to share, then please pass it to your child to bring to school.

Reading

This week we are launching our brand new Year 2 reading scheme. It works slightly differently than in Year 1. Books will be allocated to each child with a number so that they will know which one they are responsible for and be kept for two weeks. Again, please keep the books inside their planner to provide some protection. As always, please bring the book into school every day with their planner. Books will be collected in on alternate Fridays from now on.

Spellings/Phonics

Alongside the reading scheme is a new spelling resource that builds on the phonics in Year 1. It is brand new, like the reading books. After the first week, it seems to be an instant success. No spellings will be sent home at the moment.

Maths

We are continuing to focus on place value. These are our learning points for this week:

Write numbers to 100 in words.

Understand how to partition numbers to 100

Write numbers to 100 in expanded form. Eg 65 - 6 tens and 5 ones

Identify 10s on the number line to 100,

10s and 1s on the number line to 100

Reminders - Forest School

Although it was a wet day after the scorching weather recently, Group 1 had their first session at Forest School on Tuesday afternoon. Please remember to bring in a full waterproof kit every Tuesday to change into. Your child will need a change of clothes that cover their arms and legs, waterproofs/wellington boots for wet weather, a hat and drink. Old clothes are ideal as they will get muddy and torn in the wild area at school. If your child is NOT doing Forest School presently, all can wear PE kit and we will see how it goes in the next few weeks.

All Year 2 should wear PE kits to school on a Thursday.

Many thanks and have a lovely week!
